In the two years I’ve been in UST, one of the things I’ve learned is that being a Thomasian is much, much more than just enrolling to a course, buying a uniform, and coming to class 15 minutes early everyday. Of course it’s much more. Why else do you think most of us Thomasians are happy being in campus? To see our friends, to have a glimpse of our campus crush? Perhaps, but that’s not the point now.
After countless postponements, the Welcome Walk finally took place last August 5. I’ve joked about that with a friend of mine from the Freshmen year. I told her “Inah, you know why there are storms coming here and postponing your Welcome Walk all the time? Because it’s a sign that you’re not welcome at all.” She then starts to hit my arm and shouts “Meanie!”
Anyway, the first Welcome Walk had the storm Falcon who thought it’d be a good idea to crash the event. What’s funny is that the walk would have proceeded “rain or shine” as announced. Perhaps the committee meant “drizzle or shine” because it was raining a lot that Friday.
Then after several days, the walk was scheduled for July 29 but was also postponed because of the inconvenient weather. That was unlucky. Just when the freshies thought they were finally walking under the arch, they get the rug pulled from under them by disturbed weather. But in this case, there was no storm but rather just some dark skies that the council thought were disturbing.
So does this Welcome Walk automatically make you a Thomasian? If you want to be traditional about it, it’s the event that makes you a Thomasian. But walking through a stone arch that’s aged for a few decades would make you part of a university? Really?
What actually makes you a Thomasian anyway? Is it the Welcome Walk itself? The uniforms? The lanyards? The ID?
You can look like a Thomasian but deep inside, do you really feel like you’re one? Maybe you’re still a high school student masquerading like a college student. Or perhaps you’ve taken the Welcome Walk but somehow you’re not a Thomasian yet. How is that possible?
The Welcome Walk is just the appetizer in a buffet. There’s more to your Thomasian experience. Assemblies, recollections, walks, and masses. So grab a plate because the meals are coming, it’s a long line, and you only get one round in the table.
Food metaphors aside, what’s the most important thing to becoming a Thomasian anyway?
“Oh Ralph, I have the registration form! That makes me a Thomasian!”
That makes you a UST student. You’re enrolled in UST but still not a Thomasian. There’s a difference. From the word “freshman”, you’re fresh, still naïve and new to the campus and its horribly wonderful ways. Yes, you’ve enrolled but that’s just one step.
Becoming a true Thomasian comes from one word – “acceptance”. As I’ve said before, you could wear the uniform, you could get the ID and the lanyard, you could come to class 15 minutes early everyday for the entire school year, but do you accept that you’re a Thomasian?
Ah yes, acceptance. To be a Thomasian, you just have to accept that you’re in UST. Not in a “There’s no way out of this so I just have to accept this fate” but rather in an “I’m so glad to be here and I love this place!” Acceptance is the key to becoming a true Thomasian.
If you accept your fate as a Thomasian (sounds a little morbid, doesn’t it?), that would open all the doors for you. You’ll meet all sorts of great people around UST. You’ll be able to have fun in school days. You’ll even think of creative ways of spending your vacant periods. But this will only be possible if you accept being a Thomasian.
Accept being a Thomasian and the doors to becoming one will open. So keep calm and you’ll eventually be a Thomasian. Hey, for all we know, it could be the time of your life and you’ve never felt that way before. This is true and you’ll owe it all to becoming a Thomasian.
