With the monkey of eligibility already out of his back, Karim Abdul is already showing that he is a force to be reckoned with.
Tying his career-high of 21 points, which he had set three days ago, Abdul powered UST Tigers to a 77-70 victory over the upset-determined UP Maroons, at the resumption of UAAP Season 74 Men’s Senior Basketball at Smart-Araneta Coliseum, Sunday.
The 6-foot-7 Cameroonian also grabbed 11 rebounds and had three assists. Jeric Fortuna chipped in with 15 markers, 10 of which coming in the final canto.
The Tigers is almost on their way to a rout after opening the third quarter with a 16-5 run which gave them their largest lead of the game at 54-38 with Abdul contributing 7 points.
But the Maroons did not went home without a fight, launching an 18-4 salvo bridging from third to fourth quarter to cut down Tigers lead to two, 58-56, after Maroons’ Mike Gamboa drained three of six made triples.
Tigers then surged ahead anew with a 13-5 run anchored by Fortuna to increase the lead to ten, 71-61, halfway point of the final canto.
Maroons answered six consecutive points to cut down the lead to four, 71-67, off a couple of floaters by Maroons’ rookie Paolo Romero.
Fortuna and Jeric Teng then closed the game for the Tigers with the former getting away with a crossover move to the basket against Romero’s defense and the latter draining four free throws for the final tally.
Teng finished with 13 points, Carmelo Afuang and rookie Kevin Ferrer contributed 8 markers each.
Sophomore forward Mike Silungan led the Maroons with 19 points, Gamboa chipped in with 18 markers, all from three pointers.
Tigers upped their record to 4-4 in the fourth place while Maroons went down to 2-6.
Meanwhile, UST Tiger Cubs escaped with 60-58 victory over UPIS Junior Maroons at the resumption of the juniors’ action at Blue Eagle Gym, Saturday.
Alru Cubilla led the charge of Allan Ascue with 14 points. Paolo Florentin added 12 markers.
The Cubs, who played without Aaron Javier (possible ACL tear) and Joshua Almajeda (tissue tear in the back), overcame a 26-32 deficit at the half to stave off the win.
In the distaff side, Tigresses, sans starting point guard Rina Laud, suffered their first loss in eight games against the two-time defending champions Adamson Lady Falcons, 67-55, on Sunday.
Laud is suffering from a knee injury, which she got in their 60-53 win against DLSU Lady Archers last Wednesday.
