Refreshments are essential to us, college students. These cool drinks keep us hydrated and revitalized during the dog days when we feel the intense heat of the sun taking a toll on us. In the midst of enjoying our habitual dose of coffee, flavored shakes, and milk teas, there comes a new, healthy, and all-natural yet still equally refreshing drink making a name of its own. Add to that, it’s also an upcoming trend among Thomasians.
If you guessed the “Buko craze,” well yes, you’re right!
The same old customary refreshment immersed in a fresh environment appears to be the setting of buko juice, popularly known as “coco juice” in Hollywood. It is given a renaissance through its new target market. And being the second purest liquid next to water, it’s undeniably an effective thirst quencher.
If you are aiming for the delectable taste of buko juice and shakes, stalls selling these are popping in and around our campus. You can find Buko ni Juan along V. Concepcion St. across Dapitan, which offers the plain buko juice and a rather creamy buko shake. You can choose to have your drink in a plastic bottle, convenient if you feel like walking around while enjoying your beverage.
But, if you want buko shake that suits your budget, head to Wow Buko near the P. Noval gate and enjoy it in its very affordable price. A regular cup costs a student-friendly price of 20 pesos.
If you want a twist in your buko drink, then the Buko Loco kiosk at the car park’s Higher Grounds may be the one for you. Aside from the delightful buko products and its affordability, Buko Loco reinvents buko juice by adding flavors like caramel or pandan, which will surely tickle your taste buds. A variance on the regular buko shake is also posed with Buko Froothies and their best-seller, the Buko Halo-Halo shake.
Coconut is most known for its health benefits. It is a natural isotonic beverage; low in carbs, raises metabolism, controls diabetes, cleanses the digestive tract, relieves urinary problems, helps in lowering high blood pressure, keeps the skin hale, and can even reduce risks of cancer.
Coconut juice is now a major fad in the United States, endorsed by superstars like Rihanna and Madonna because of its taste and health-giving properties. And do you know that our country benefits from this? Coconut is part of Philippines’ major exports nowadays. Who knew that our “tree of life” can be converted to a source of livelihood?
Why is everyone crazy about buko?
Aside from being novel refreshments, buko drinks is a flight away from carbonated, sweetened, and the conventional caffeinated beverages. It is unlike coffee, sodas, normal shakes or milk teas. These coconut-based drinks have an obvious edge in giving favorable health benefits and they cost less, which are both a plus to a student’s diet and budget.
Tasteful, refreshing, affordable, healthy—no wonder buko is the trend these days. So, are you ready for a new experience? Are you willing to go loco for coco?
