UST assures of final four playoffs, yields to UE

Published

on

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses fell short against the University of the East Lady Warriors, 58-64, in their last game in the elimination round of the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball tournament, Tuesday, at the Smart Araneta Colisuem in Quezon City.
Top-gunners Shanda Anies and Ruby Portillo paced the Tigresses with 22 and 11 points respectively, while Love Sto. Domingo led the Lady Warriors with 25 big points.
The España-based team had a lackluster performance in the third quarter after failing to put a clamp on UE’s streaking offense.
The Lady Warriors uncorked a 16-5 run sparked by Sto. Domingo’s corner three at the 5:30 mark of the game, 38-46. After a fiery trade of baskets between both squads, Anies was able to tie the game with 1:45 left in the fourth quarter, 55-all.
Despite Anies and Ruby Portillo’s efforts the Tigresses failed to slip past UE due to costly turnovers in the final seconds of the game, 58-64.
“Ang crucial ‘yung third quarter. Nagpalamang kami 16-5 ‘e, so I think if we kept the game close until the fourth hindi kami naghabol ng ganun kalaki. Parang at least we had a better chance of winning the game,” UST head coach Haydee Ong said.
The Tigresses opened the game on a high note sparked by Misaela Larosa’s surprise trey in the opening seconds of the first quarter, 0-3. Anies unleashed big baskets to blow their lead to 10 by the end of the opening quarter, 23-13.
UST, however, had a slow start in the second quarter but was able to recover through the efforts of Tigress forwards Larosa and Bettina Penaflor, 33-30.
“’Yung mga factors na free throws missed, turnovers namin nung first half malaking bagay din, dami din nilang [UE] score off our turnover. So hopefully if we have a playoff against Adamson manalo kami and we’ll go against UE,” Ong added.
UST committed 26 turnovers while the Lady Warriors only had 18. Also, the Tigresses only had a 36.84 percentage from the free throw line compared to UE’s 69.23 percent efficiency.
With the loss, UST is currently in the fourth spot and holding a 6-8 win-loss card tied with the Adamson University Lady Falcons and will face each other for a knockout fourth seed playoff.
Quarter Scores: 23-13, 33-30, 38-46, 58-64

The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs failed to snatch the season opener win as they collapse against the Ateneo De Manila Blue Eaglets, 73-79, in the UAAP 79 junior’s basketball tournament, Saturday, at the FilOil Flying V arena in San Juan City.
UST’s 31 turnovers to Ateneo’s 16 proved to be fatal in the second half of the firefight.
UST’s main gunner Miguel Ratuiste also fouled out on the final canto with 8:27 remaining in the final quarter to give Ateneo a huge advantage in the offensive and defensive end in the final minutes of the game.
“Hindi naman natin sinisisi yung officiating, pero medyo [madaming] bad calls eh in favor sa kalaban natin eh. Pero nakita naman natin na lumaban talaga ang mga bata,” Tiger Cubs assistant coach Richie Melencio said.
Both teams were red hot in the first half of the game. Ateneo took the slim lead in the first, 19-23, with Tiger Cub Clark Ballada recording six markers in the quarter alone.
It was the same story for the second quarter as both teams remained focused. Veterans Inand Fornillos and Ratuiste provided solid contributions to give the Espana-based squad a one-point lead at the end of the half, 36-35.
UST quickly went downhill in the third canto after the Eaglets closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run to start the 4th period with a high note, 57-62.
Tiger Cub Juan Marzan shone bright in the final quarter as he orchestrated a trey and a four-point opportunity to tie the game at 69. The successful run was short lived as Ateneo answered with a back-to-back three from Jason Credo and a SamJosef Belangel jumper to seal the first win for the Eaglets, 73-79.
Belangel spearheaded Ateneo’s barrage with a double-double record of 20 points and 15 boards. Credo followed with 15 markers and three steals.
Fornillos led the Tiger Cubs with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks. Ratuiste came up with 10 points and seven boards.
UST will try to snatch their first win as they face the University of the East Red Warriors on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the same venue.

Ateneo spoils UST’s final game

Published

The Ateneo Blue Eagles prevented a happy ending for the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 74-64, in UAAP Season 79 men’s basketball tournament, Saturday, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Louie Vigil ended his collegiate career leading the team with 18 points while Marvin Lee and Jon Sheriff added another nine points each.
“Nung first half pa lang medyo kinakabahan na ako, tinatanong ko yung sarili ko kung nabigay ko na ba yung lahat? Am I contented with this?” Tigers Captain Louie Vigil said about his final game. “Personally, hindi ako nakuntento kasi hindi kami nakapasok (sa Final Four).”
Isaac Go lead the Blue Eagles with 15 points and four rebounds while Mike Nieto added 13 points. Vince Tolentino contributed 11 points and nine boards.
A Jeepy Faundo basket early in the fourth cut the Eagles lead to three, 59-62. Ateneo responded with a 7-2 run courtesy of back to back treys from Mike Nieto and Anton Asistio who completed a rare four point play.
