Canon, a world leader in digital imaging, announces the launch of EOS 700D, the most intuitive Vari-angle touch screen interface on the market. Driven by an 18-megapixel CMOS Sensor and powerful DIGIC 5 imaging processor, the new EOS 700D offers an incredible host of features for the ultimate imaging experience including enhancements in EOS Movie performance for a superior movie-making experience, and Creative Filters can now be previewed in real-time using the Vari-angle LCD monitor.
A focus on superior image quality
The EOS 700D achieves its class-leading image quality with advanced technologies like Canon’s DIGIC 5 image processor and a low-noise, high-resolution 18-megapixel APS-C-size CMOS sensor. The combination of these two components allow for extremely detailed images with wide dynamic range and rich tonal gradation.
The EOS 700D delivers speed on various levels. It has a wide range of ISO speeds, ranging from 100 to 12800 (expandable to 25600) lending versatility for capturing fast-moving subjects even in low-light situations. The sensitivity of the CMOS sensor working in tandem with the DIGIC 5 processor also grants the EOS 700D swiftness when it comes to continuous burst shooting. It can continuously snap photos at speeds of up to 5 frames per second (fps), which makes it an ideal camera to capture sports and action shots without missing that defining moment. The minimal black-out time between snaps also allow the user to keep track of the subject to keep it ideally framed. Plus an advanced 9-point all cross-type Auto-Focus (AF) system, so no time is wasted on focusing.
The Multi Shot Noise Reduction feature allow users to take four consecutive shots which the camera will automatically merge and align to compensate for noise while improving detail and definition. Night photography is also more convenient with the Handheld Night Scene mode that facilitates capturing shots in low-light without the need of a tripod. This is achieved by capturing four shots consecutively at a fast shutter speed, then automatically merging them to form one pristine image. The EOS 700D also offers HDR Backlight Control, where it shoots three images at different exposures to form one perfectly exposed image, preserving details from both bright and dark areas.
The superior Auto-Focus (AF) capability of the EOS 700D is another clear indicator of its agility. The viewfinder uses a powerful 9-point all cross-type AF system, and the EOS 700D is one of only two cameras in this class to benefit from such a system (the other being the EOS 650D). When using its Live View mode, the EOS 700D makes use of the Hybrid CMOS AF system for incredibly fast focusing and tracking. This system uses the extremely nimble Phase detection AF to track subjects in the middle of the frame, allowing for extremely fast focusing. Simply put, a user can confidently point the EOS 700D at a subject and expect to capture the perfect moment without wasting time on focusing.
Intuitive and intelligent functions
Users who are more passionate about photography would definitely like to make better use of the EOS 700D’s many Creative Filters. Popular effects like the Toy Camera, Fish-eye and Miniature filters have been giving photographs that extra bit of style, but the EOS 700D makes it even easier with the ability to preview these shots on the LCD before taking the photo. This preview is especially beneficial for filters like Miniature and Fish-eye, allowing users to properly frame the distortions for the desired effect.
Newer users who have yet to fully understand the mechanics of photography can take advantage of the EOS 700D’s new Special Scene (SCN) modes, in addition to the basic modes like Close-Up, Sports and Landscape. These new modes consist of Night Portrait, Handheld Night Scene, and HDR Backlight Control, and will automatically adjust the camera settings for optimal performance in such situations. Night Portrait captures the beautiful night lights of a city while still properly lighting a subject by combining the flash with a slow shutter speed. Handheld Night Scene and HDR Backlight control quickly snap several photos, and combining their visual data into a single image with nicely balanced lighting. Users merely have to select the appropriate mode, and the EOS 700D handles the rest.
The EOS 700D also has a Scene Intelligent Auto mode which detects a variety of factors like the lighting, movement or detect whether a tripod is in use, to automatically adjust one of 29 optimal settings. These settings will adjust controls such as white balance, exposure and focus to give casual users fuss-free and good-looking photos, or help more advanced users by automating the basic settings so that they can concentrate on other things like shot composition and subject placement.
For more precise control when shooting in live-view, the various camera settings in the EOS 700D can also be adjusted via the intuitive touch screen interface. Quick AF and exposure adjustments can be made simply by tapping on the specific area of the picture. Other controls such as shutter speed and aperture can also be adjusted with sliders on the touch screen. Users can also employ the touch shutter feature to focus and capture a shot by touching the LCD screen. In playback mode, familiar touch gestures like pinch and zoom can be used to quickly review shots.
More movie magic
For users who favor moving images, the EOS 700D has improved EOS Movie functions to shoot superior quality videos. The Hybrid CMOS AF technology powers the Movie Servo AF function when shooting videos, easily tracking subjects quickly and accurately even if they approach or move away from the camera. This is useful when recording more mobile subjects. The camera is also equipped with a built-in stereo microphone.
One of the most compelling reasons for movie-enthusiasts to upgrade to an EOS DSLR is the ability to make use of different lenses to capture beautiful shots with expressive depth of field blurs. To start new users on this exciting journey, the EOS 700D comes with a kit lens that makes full use of its EOS Movie capabilities.
The new EF-S18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is an advanced new lens designed specifically to improve the EOS Movie experience. It includes a new 6-group inner focusing system and a stepping motor that allows for smooth and quiet Movie Servo AF. The built-in image stabilizer allows it to take photos as sharp as other lenses do with their shutter speeds set to 4 settings faster. It also has a 7-blade circular aperture for beautiful soft-focus images, and full-time manual focus allows fussier photographers to do manual focus adjustments even when in AF mode. The 18-55mm zoom range, along with its compact and lightweight design, makes an ideal everyday lens that is versatile enough for most normal situations. The STM in its name denotes the stepping motor inside it, which allows the Movie Servo AF function to achieve silent and smooth autofocusing. Users will be able to take movies in quiet environments, such as videos of sleeping babies, without disrupting the serenity with any AF motor noises.
Not every user is adept to videography, so the EOS 700D is equipped with the Video Snapshot feature. Video Snapshot simplifies the video-recording process by capturing quick video clips (set to 2, 4, or 8 second durations), and then placing them in an album. The user can then use the in-camera editor to re-order or delete the clips in the album to form a coherent flow. Once that is done, the clips can be played back seamlessly like a short film, along with background music. All of this can be done in-camera, without requiring a computer or any additional software.
Better feel and design
For greater comfort and functionality, Canon has designed the EOS 700D’s body with some new features. The overall camera body inherits the tight elegant curves of the popular EOS 650D, complete with the nicely cut edges and lightweight look, but also with a new slightly texturized coating that enhances the tactile feel of the EOS 700D.
The new Mode Dial has also been improved, with a heightened sense of quality and comfort as the top of the dial features embossed metal mode icons instead of the printed ones seen in earlier models. The side of the dial also has a pyramid-like pattern for greater grip and comfort, and the dial can now rotate 360° to allow users quicker access to the various modes.
Enthusiastic photographers like to photograph the world from new and different angles, and the EOS 700D allows them to do this easily with its Vari-angle Clear View LCD II monitor. This monitor can be flipped and tilted with a large degree of motion, granting users the flexibility to achieve extremely high and low angles by holding the camera with extreme poses while still retaining a good view of the LCD screen. The Vari-angle screen also opens to the side, which allows it to be used when the EOS 700D attached to a tripod.
