WAY before today’s KathNiel, JaDine, KimXi, and many more, various loveteams have already been dominating the Filipino television and movie industry (even our notebook covers!). Let’s take a stroll down the memory lane and reminisce the tandems that once made (or still are making) us, or our parents, swoon.
1. Guy and Pip
This timeless loveteam of Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz II was formed when the two were first paired up for the movie “Young Girl” back in 1969. Since then, the pair gained a large following. They were an atypical pairing because Nora had a petite stature and dark skin while Tirso had a tall physique and tisoy looks. Their on-screen romance turned off-screen as well, but they did not end up together. They have made more than 14 films and even records that became bestsellers. In 1985, they starred in their reunion movie “Till We Meet Again” and made three other films in the same year. Just last year, they top-billed the TV movie “When I Fall in Love.”
2. Sharon and Gabby
The renowned parents of actress KC Concepcion, Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion made up one of the biggest loveteams back in the ‘80s. Their first movie together in 1981, “Dear Heart,” paved the way for their teamup’s popularity and more projects together. One of the couple’s famous quotes is from their movie “P.S I Love You” which goes like “Love should not be a heavy feeling, it should not make you suffer. Love should make you happy. It’s a smile in the heart, it makes you come alive, love makes you want to fly, you know…” They got married in 1984 and had one child, only to be separated three years later. They reunited for three more movies in the early ‘90s.
3. Richard and Dawn
Richard and Dawn first starred in the catapulting 1991 drama “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit.” They, too, turned their reel romance real, but eventually broke up. Their on-screen chemistry has never ceased, as proven by their reunion for the 2012 teleserye, “Walang Hanggan.” They are also set to star in a new TV series (working title: “A Family Story”) and movie (working title: “Crossroads”) this year.
Fun fact: Even Richard’s wife, Lucy Torres is a fan of the pairing!
4. Sheryl and Romnick
Sheryl Cruz and Romnick Sarmienta’s pairing was from the ‘80s show “That’s Entertainment.” They starred in movies together like “Puso sa Puso” in 1988, “Everlasting Love” in 1989, and “Mundo Man ay Magunaw” in 1990 among others. They also began a relationship, but when it ended, their loveteam did as well.
5. Angelu and Bobby
Angelu de Leon and Bobby Andrews’ popular tandem back in the ‘90s started from teen shows “T.G.I.S (Thank God It’s Sabado)” and “Growing Up.” They starred as a loveteam in many movies like “Silaw,” “T.G.I.S The Movie,” and “Ikaw na Sana” among others. Their teamup came into a stop in 1988 when Angelu revealed that she was pregnant with action star Joko Diaz’ child.
6. Judy Ann and Wowie
If GMA had Angelu and Bobby, ABS-CBN had Judy Ann Santos and Wowie de Guzman. Their tandem headlined the hit TV shows “Mara Clara” and “Esperanza,” and their movie versions, together with the films “Sana Naman,” “Kung Alam Mo Lang,” and “Wow Multo.”
7. Marvin and Jolina
Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal’s teamup started with the youth-oriented series “Gimik.” They starred in a number of romantic comedy movies namely, “Labs Kita…Okey Lang?” in 1998 (who could ever forget Jolina’s heartfelt line “Oh yes, kaibigan mo ako. Kaibigan mo lang ako… And I’m so stupid to make the biggest mistake of falling in love with my best friend.”?), “Gimik, The Movie” in 1999, and “Kung Ikaw ay Isang Panaginip” in 2002. They’ve recently united for the show “Flordeliza” in ABS-CBN.
8. Claudine and Rico
Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan first starred in the film “Radio Romance” in 1996. They were featured in many movies together, like “Flames” in 1997, “Madrasta” in 1996, “Mula sa Puso” in 1999, and “Got 2 Believe” in 2002 where Lorenz (Yan) turned up the kilig factor when he said “I didn’t even believe in forever Toni, but I think I found forever in you” to Toni (Barretto). Like most loveteams, they became real-life lovers but broke up eventually.
9. Kristine and Jericho
Many know Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales as Yna and Angelo from the hit TV series “Pangako Sa’yo” from which they were dubbed as the Most Popular Love team from the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation Award. They also starred in the movies “Forevermore” in 2002 and “Ngayong Nandito Ka” in 2003. They also took their romance off-screen but soon broke up.
