UST Judokas end first day with seven gold medals in UAAP

The UST Judokas made their way to the podium in seven categories of the UAAP Judo tournament.

The University of Santo Tomas Golden Judokas and Lady Judokas asserted dominance in the opening day of the UAAP season 79 Judo Championships on Saturday, in the De La Salle Zobel Sports Pavillion in Muntinlupa City.

 

The Golden Judokas recorded two golds and one bronze in the first day. The Lady Judokas swept most of the categories with a 3-3-1 gold-silver-bronze outing.

 

Returnee Luis San Diego toppled the -81kg after dismantling Joshua Colet in the finals round.

 

Renzo Cazeñas settled for Bronze medal in the -90kg category with the win over UP’s Gabriel Avendaño.

 

In the heavyweight (+100) division, Dither Tablan was able to notch the gold medal after defeating Ateneo’s Rafael Cadiente in a grueling golden score match.

 

“Expected naman talaga na pangfinals sila, pero alam nyo naman sa judo, maraming pagbabago, so far naman nakuha nila, so good.” UST Men’s head coach Steven Esteban said.

 

In the women’s division, Lady Judoka Miam Salvador snagged the gold medal against her team mate Alexis Belen in the -44kg. It was the same story for the -48kg category as Khrizzie Pabulayan went for gold along with her team mate Mae Yabas who won silver.

 

Veteran Sueko Kinjho got her third gold medal in row with the convincing victory against DLSU’s Charmea Quelino with an Ippon in the -52kg division.

 

Lei Tolentino was not able to snatch the 4th gold medal for UST as she succumbed to DLSU’s Marjorie Santiago in a golden score showdown.

 

“Deserving lang talaga na sakanila mapunta yun (referring to the victories) kasi pinaghirapan nila talaga yun” UST Women’s head coach Gerard Arce said.

 

In the Juniors division, the junior Judokas tallied a total of 0-2-6 medals with the silvers coming from David Dela Cruz in the -66kg and Daniel Amores in -73kg.

 

The girls division finished the first day with 2-1-2 medal tally. Both Louise Gabrielle Paaño and Sydney Sy secured the gold medal finish in -70kg and -78kg, respectively.

 

The second day of the tournament will resume tomorrow, Nov.20, at the same venue.

Tiger Judokas claim 4-way victory in Judo championships

The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Judokas have dominated the mats once again as they completed a grand slam in the UAAP season 79 Judo Championships at the De La Salle-Zobel Sports Pavilion in Muntinlupa City Sunday.

 

The Tiger Judokas notched a win in the men’s, women’s, boys’, and girls’ division to successfully grab all the championship trophy in all four divisions.

 

The Golden Judokas took home the gold and silver medals in the -55kg category. Daryl Mercado bagged the gold while Russel Lorenzo finished in second.

 

Veteran Al Llamas made a statement in the -60kg as he finished the match with an armbar to grab the gold medal finish.

 

Czar Bayas settled for bronze in the -66kg category by defeating Edward Borja via rear-naked choke.

 

Tiger Daryl Mercado won the Most Valuable Award in the men’s division.

 

In the women’s division, Eunice Lucero managed to seal a victory against UE’s Patricia Rosario in the -63kg.

 

Aislynn Yap fell short in her championship bout as she settled for silver in the -70kg.

 

Jamaica Ponciano won bronze in the -78kg category. Renielyn Castillo also took silver in the category.

 

Ana Bernardino also surrendered to ADMU’s Seanne Cheung to give her the silver in the +78kg.

 

“Napakaworth it para sa kanila( women’s division), para sa men’s, para sa juniors, lahat naman pinagdaanan nila yung hirap. Sobrang sarap at sobrang saya.” UST Women’s head coach Gerard Arce said.

 

With the win, the women’s division took home it’s third straight championship in the tournament.

 

The Juniors division also took home the goods in the boys and girls with the back-to-back championship.

 

The boys’ division finished with 43 points while La Salle Zobel’s 39. The girls division also stood out strong with 65 points.

 

Aaron Reyes and Krizza Amisola took home the MVP crown for the juniors. “Talagang pinaghirapan [nila] talaga, alam kong gustong gusto nila, Kaya nakuha nila.” Juniors head coach Mike De Vera said.

 

UST is the only team to record a grand slam twice in the UAAP. The last time they won in all divisions was in Season 75.
