Intellectual excellence is the immovable pillar of the University of Santo Tomas as epitomized by the annual intercollegiate quiz Pautakan, organized and founded by the Varsitarian, the official publication of the university.

Now on its 32nd year, 13 teams comprised of the brightest minds from different colleges and faculties will face off this March for the prized Pautakan trophy.

Conceived in January 1977, Pautakan, which was then known as the “Annual Intercollegiate Quiz Contest,” is the longest running quiz bee in the country. The term “Pautakan” was coined only two years after its conception to earn distinction from other contests.

The annual quiz contest is not only a prominent feature of the University’s foundation anniversary. It also celebrates the bond between the student publication and the institution not only academic excellence but also camaraderie among students. Surely, the competition has added luster to the Varsitarian’s 81 years of undaunted campus journalism.
