WANT to immerse yourself further into the Thomasian community and increase your sense of belongingness? Do you want to break the monotony and add flavor to your college life? Joining an organization enables you to do just that.
The annual Recruitment 101 once again paved the way for the Thomasian students to become part of university-wide organizations that they could call a family.
With this year’s theme, “R101: Your introductory course on student involvement,” the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Plaza Mayor was filled with colorful booths and various events all throughout the week-long fest from July 15 to 20.
Star-studded parade
The UST Yellow Jackets graced the event with heavy drumbeats and cheers. A festive parade led by Thomasian beauty queens, Alma Cabasal, Ms. Philippines Fire 2013, and Bernadette Mae Aguirre, Ms. Philippines Eco-Tourism 2013, while riding in fabulous sports cars, courtesy of Automasino, the unofficial university-wide automobile organization, and Hyper-5 . They were followed by representatives of the various organizations with their banners, costumes and props.
After the parade, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held with Assistant to the Rector for Student Affairs Prof. Evelyn Songco, Ph. D, Student Organizations Coordinating Council (SOCC) Adviser Dr. Antonio M. Chua, and Executive Assistant to the Secretary General Assoc. Prof. Imelda A. Dakis, M.D, together with the beauty queens.
A program was held afterwards, featuring a mob dance led by Jeff Acala and representatives of the different organizations. It was followed by stunning intermissions by the UST Yellow Jackets and Salinggawi Dance Troupe.
The program concluded with the official start of the recruitment at 3 p.m.
Recruitment Gimmicks, stand-out performances
Each of the organizations had their own style of attracting new members, from the decoration of the booths, to the games and activities they prepared to catch the attention of the student by-passers.
SOCC also had their own booth wherein they cater to the students’ queries. They had a sign-up listing for those interested to be part of them, and they also gave away R101 flyers, “tiger paw” fans, and coupons from Max’s restaurant on the event’s last day.
Aside from the posters and the flyers distributed, some organizations gave freebies such as pens, stickers, fans, pins, bookmarks and other stuff. Others capitalized on the “Minion craze” brought by the animated movie, Despicable Me 2, by having minion-themed giveaways.
Community Achievers Association conducted free handwriting analyses to their visitors. While others like UST Filipino martial arts group, Wushu Flaming Tigers, Thomasian Nihon Kyoukai, demoed martial arts moves to potential applicants.
There are recruiters who wore costumes and brought props like Mediartrix, Thomasian Nihon Kyoukai, and Annyeong Tomasino. But what probably stood out among them is Red Cross Youth Council, with their “bloody people” motif.
Among the organizations, only two had mascots which are “Aryo” of Becarios De Santo Tomas, and Lego Captain America of the official Ultimate Frisbee organization, Espanya United. Every day, there are different gimmicks to promote their societies.
Almost every night throughout the week, there were variety shows held to showcase the talents of the members of the orgs such as singing and dancing. Some college-based organizations also had the chance to perform, first time that they were given this much exposure in a university-wide event.
Ending this jam-packed event
A closing program and awarding ceremony was held on the last day of R101 with performances from special guests: CFAD Freshman Aria Clemente, famous for her singing and ukulele-playing on YouTube; Alec Dungo, ex-housemate in the television show Pinoy Big Brother; Julia Melia, Thomasian Idol ’13; and Thomasian alumnus John Lapus, who shared his experiences in his stay in the University in the way of stand-up comedy.
Awards were given to the different organizations which stood out from the rest. The best booth was awarded to MUSIKAT, while the Red Cross Youth Council got the best parade. The organization that had the most number of recruits was UNICEF. Teatro Tomasino was awarded as the best creative performance. The title organization of the year was given to the returning Annyeong Tomasino, which was not recognized last year due to failure of submitting required documents.
“We are grateful yet challenged because having this title is serious. We have to justify the ‘biggest comeback’ or the ‘Org of the Year’ [award],” said Annyeong Tomasino President Emyfer Flores.
Started and Ended with a Bang
Current SOCC President, Jan Michael Borja, when asked about the outcome of the event, said that everything went well.
“It was successful. Compared to last year, we were able to get many sponsors”, said Borja.
Meanwhile, SOCC Vice President for Service Assurance and this year’s R101 project head, Jefferson Acala, said the event was able to serve its purpose.
“It was able to fulfill its primary goal, to let the university-wide organizations recruit their members and to let most of the Thomasians know the nature of each univ-wide organization,” he said.
Acala also said that the rains did not hinder the event to push through, “It started and ended with a bang. It was able to give entertainment and knowledge to the Thomasian community through the daily activities/program. R101 2013 was definitely a success,” he added.
Recruitment 101 was sponsored by Resorts World Manila, Starr’s Famous Shakes, Cebu Pacific, Wenger Bags Philippines, Cloud 9, 3M Littmann Stethoscopes, Orange Soda, KFC, and Chalk Magazine.
