DOMNET, network of Dominican schools, colleges and universities opened their three-day national convention in the AMV-COA multi-purpose hall last January 29.
Day 1 began with a mass headed by the Most Reverend Florentino F. Cinense, D.D, Bishop of Tarlac, with Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P as the homilist.
Following the mass was the introduction of the delegates and cluster heads, having at least 7 clusters, with the convention hosted by Prof. Cristina M. Castro-Cabal, Ph.D and Asst. Prof. Louie Benedict Ignacio.
Talks featured topics about Catholic School Leadership in the 21st century, and legal issues affecting catholic schools with Msgr. Gerardo O. Santos, Ed.D, Regional Director, Catholic Educational Association (CEAP) and Atty. Joseph Estrada, Legal Counsel, CEAP as the respective speakers.
Bro. Narciso S. Erguiza, FSC, President of the CEAP was the event’s keynote speaker.
Day 2, started with a mass presided by Rev. Fr. Tamerlane R. Lana, O.P. In his homily, he told the story of St. Dominic’s life and legacy, and urged the delegates to “catch the fire again of Dominic” by living as he did.
The mass was followed by the talk titled “Celebrating the 8th Centenary of the Founding of the Dominican Order” led by the Father Provincial of the Dominican Order, Rev. Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner, III, O.P. wherein he oriented the delegates of the event, and enumerated the criteria for the celebration of the Order’s coming Jubilee.
With the theme “Sent to preach the Gospel,” Fr. Timoner encouraged the delegates to be part of the “dynamic process of renewal” of oneself, highlighting the need to “venture into new worlds” and to reach out to believers and non-believers, and to be creative in preaching the Gospel through today’s arts and technology.
“The Salamanca Project,” given by the Master of Students of the Dominican Studentate Rev. Fr. Pablo Tiong, O.P. talked about how the Human Rights Arguments and Faith-Based Arguments between the Church and its followers/non-followers are complementary; that “it can be defended in good conscience in terms of human values.”
Lastly, Vice-Rector for Religious Affairs of the University of Santo Tomas Rev. Fr. Filemon dela Cruz, Jr., O.P. gave the final talk of the day, titled “The Youth of Today.” This focused on the new ways to tackle the issues and improvements in society and education involving the youth.
The final day of the national convention began with a morning prayer and commission reports on Education Leadership, Instruction, Research, Community Service and Youth.
After a workshop and cluster reports, DOMNET concluded with a mass presided by Rev. Fr. Ernesto M. Arceo, O.P, Rector of Aquinas University of Legaspi.
The theme for this year’s DOMNET is a verse from (Joel 3:1): The Dominican Laity and Preaching “Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.
Worldwide, the Dominican family is preparing for the 800th anniversary of the confirmation of the Order of Preachers, which will take place in 2016.
