Contenders for the upcoming Central Student Council (CSC) elections promised a more transparent student council and an involved Thomasian community during the filing of candidacy, Tuesday, March 29.
Incumbent CSC Treasurer Roy Sergio Rey (IND), incumbent Institute of Physical Education and Athletics Student Council president Janela Love Nartates (LTC), and incumbent College of Commerce and Business Administration Student Council (CBASC) assistant secretary Patricia Mae Yi (LD) are vying for the presidency.
Incumbent Pharmacy Student Council external public relations officer and TomasinoWeb writer Steven Grecia (LTC) and incumbent CBASC assistant treasurer Jose Ramon Liñan are running for vice president.
Junior Industrial Design student Nina Bianca Ramirez (Lakasdiwa), Physical Therapy freshman and former UST High School Student Council President Nina Pasno (LTC), and incumbent Artlets Student Council secretary Samantha Williams (IND) are vying for the position of secretary.
Former CSC public relations officer Rjay Yu (LTC) will try to prove himself again by running for the seat of treasurer against junior Nursing student Mari Glyden Aguilar (IND) and third-year Architecture major John Rick Marwell Bartolome (LD).
Incumbent CSC public relations officer Ranel Simon Rey (IND), sophomore Accounting student Amiel Justine Ollica (LD), junior Biology major Neil Joseph Lee (IND), and incumbent CBASC auditor Romulo Terrado III also filed their candidacies for the position of auditor.
Ranel Simon withdrew his candidacy for auditor barely a day after the filing of candidacy.
Vying for the position of public relations officer are junior Information Technology major Patrick Joseph Magyani (IND), junior Journalism student Enna Hermoso (LD), and senior Behavioral Science student Jherome Ramos.
Unlike the previous elections, the Central Commission on Elections (Comelec) required the 12 candidates from the two recognized University-wide political parties and the six independent bets to deliver a three-minute speech after they filed their certificate of candidacy.
LD candidate Hermoso promised to be attentive to the “voices and clamour” of her fellow students.
“Hear and be heard. Thomasians, you only need vital information that affects our welfare inside and outside the campus,” said Hermoso. “Above all we all need to be heard. Let our voices and clamors be heard. We need to empower ourselves, Thomasians, (sic) to be agents of information dissemination and let us help one another.”
Hermoso is the executive associate to CSC Vice President John Louis Tingzon. She is also an executive coordinator at the UST Amateur Radio Club and an executive producer at UST Tiger Radio.
IND candidate and former CSC and College of Science Student Council staffer Neil Joseph Lee assured that he is running not because of personal interests, but to provide “good service”.
”I believe in veritas, the search for the truth, nothing but the truth. That’s why I’m running as auditor because a Thomasian has the right to know where his money goes and how it is spent,” Lee said.
Central Comelec Vice Chairperson Raymond John Naguit expressed his satisfaction in the outcome of the filing. “I’m happy with what happened today. Maraming nag-file this year, it only means that there is democracy in the university.”
Naguit added that more Thomasians will be involved in this year’s election as they prepared issue-based platforms that would help the students know the candidates better.
The official list of candidates will be announced during the launching and press conference of UST Halalan 2016 on March 31.
The campaign period will run from April 4 to 20 and a debate dubbed “Harapan” will be conducted from April 12 to 14. The proclamation of the new officers of student councils will be on April 22. -V. Ferreras/TomasinoWeb
