The Medicine Cinematorium was once again filled with stars and star-gazers in the 6th Annual USTv Awards held last February 18, 2010 in the San Martin De Porres Building.
Before the Thomasian supporters from different colleges and faculties scream for their favorite shows and celebrities, Rev. Fr. Florentino A. Bolo, O.P., our Secretary General, delivered his opening remarks which made the theme of USTv Awards, “The Impact of the Television in making good choices” On the other hand, our Vice Rector, Rev. Fr. Pablo Tiong, O.P. dubbed the USTv Awards as the “UST Guided Student’s Choice Awards” in his keynote address. Masters of the ceremony were hosts, Angela Fernando, Marian Michelle Oblea, both renowned Thomasian Beauty Queens, and Oliver Zara.
Performance numbers to keep the audience entertained included the Salinggawi Dance Troupe for the Opening Act and Eric Santos followed by the members of the Singing Bees namely Apple Chiu, OJ Mariano, Michael Cruz, and MC Castro who sang various love songs that surely made the audience whisper to themselves, “awesome”. The intermission numbers that followed indeed made the audiences star stricken as the hosts of Showtime, Kim Atienza, Vice Ganda, and Jugs delivered jokes that cracked the whole Thomasian crowd laughing. Also, the casts of Showtime brought with them their talented finalists, the Mortal Combat group and the Beat Guys, who both showcased groovy dance moves and exceptional stunts.
Celebrities and other media awardees did not only commended the Thomasian Community for pioneering such a youth oriented awards night in their speeches and spiel interviews but also, they acknowledged the skills and well-roundedness of Thomasian alumni that these celebrities and other media awardees have worked with.
Celebrities who came up stage and personally received their awards were Kim Atienza for the Student’s Choice for Educational Program (Matang Lawin) and Kara David for Student’s Choice for Best Documentary Program (iWitness). Jessica Soho received the award for Student’s Choice for Magazine Program Host (Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho) for the 3rd consecutive time, and Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon were acclaimed as the Student’s Choice for Female and Male Student’s Choice for News and Current Affairs Host.
In David’s speech as she received the award for “iWitness”, she explained that they have always featured the Youth because they believe that “Ang Kabataan ay ang unang-unang nakararamdam ng sakit ng lipunan.” (The youths are the first ones to become most vulnerable to the pains of the society). Failon, on the other hand, assured the crowd that the award he received will set as an inspiration for him to work harder and that he offers the award to his beloved wife.
The recipients of the Student’s Choice for Music Video were the popular band Hale with Champ Liu-Po, their vocalist, introducing his band mates who were Thomasians themselves. The band played three of their songs, one of which was “Bahay Kubo”, the acclaimed Student’s Choice for Music Video. Two other songs were “Kahit Pa”, and the song that brought them to where they are now, “The Day You Said Good Night.”
Vicky Morales of Wish Ko Lang received the award for Student’s Choice for Public Service Program; Bhoy Abunda of Showbiz News Ngayon (SNN) went up stage with the staff of their show to receive the Student’s Choice for Entertainment News Program. Abunda was just one of the celebrities who saluted the well-rounded and skilled Thomasian alumni in his speech. Mel Tianco, also with the staff of Mel and Joey, received their award for Student’s Choice for Talk Variety Program. MC Castro, who previously serenaded the audience in an intermission performance, received the award on behalf of the whole Singing Bee staff for the Student’s Choice for Game Show.
The recipients of the Student’s Choice for Gag Show award were Boy two Quizon and Diego, who was introduced by Quizon as the Brand Equity of their show “Bubble Gang” which has received the award for the fourth time. Another award that brings joy and laughter was the Student’s Choice for Situational Comedy which was awarded to “George and Cecil.” On behalf of its staff and main casts, Dimples Romana and Kakai Bautista came up stage to receive the award.
Fans of Kim Chiu, Gerald Anderson, and of the Gigger Boys (Aj Perez, Dino Imperial, Robi Domingo, Sam Concepcion, Arron Villaflor) went giggling and screaming as these stars receive the award that gives right to the Sunday variety show, ASAP, to be acclaimed as the Student’s Choice for Variety Show. The crowd’s excitement didn’t die down as the love team Kimerald received the award for the Student’s Choice for Daily Local Soap Opera (Tayong Dalawa). For the third time, Kim Chiu came to the stage as she received her first acting award, the Student’s Choice for Actress on a Daily Local Soap Opera (Tayong Dalawa). The fans of Gerald Anderson and the ever adorable Zaijian Jaranilla combined forces as they cheer for these two when Jaranilla was acclaimed as the Student’s Choice for Actor on a Daily Local Soap Opera (May Bukas Pa); Anderson, showing kindness to the kid who showed the whole world kindness through the said show, carried Jaranilla to the stage and even coached the boy on who to thank in his (Jaranilla) speech.
Aside from an acting award given to Jaranilla, he has previously gotten up the stage together with the other casts and staff of May Bukas Pa as they receive a Special Citation Award for their show. Another remarkable award that acknowledged a values oriented show was given to Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko as the Student’s Choice for Lifetime Achievement Award and was received by notable media personalities Patsy Leviste, Connie Angeles, and Fr. Jun Padua.
Aside from acknowledging the well-roundedness and skills of Thomasian Alumni, the recipients of the awards did not forget to recognize in their speeches the upcoming 400th Anniversary Celebration of our Alma Mater’s foundation.
